Visiting Hong Kong for the first time, a stop at Nathan Road is a requirement. Most visitors flock to Nathan Road for the shopping opportunities because of the boutiques offering the latest fashions, electronic shops selling a vast variety of digital cameras, MP3 Players, cell phones and stereos at very low prices; the best restaurants, street markets and a vibrant neon lit nightlife unmatched by the likes of New York City’s Times Square.
Nathan Road is the main hub of Kowloon and is known as the ‘Golden Mile’ to the locals, due to its vast collection of store fronts. Nathans runs directly up to Boundary Street, the northern limit of the British colony prior to the leasing of the New Territories in 1898, a time when this wide road was really unnecessary and back then, was known as ‘Nathan’s Folly’. Today, Nathan’s Road is one of the busiest roads in all of Hong Kong.
The only thing to be aware of, as a tourist to Nathan Road, is at night time when the worst, unfair services are offered by street urchins. Many of the stores on Nathan Road stay open till midnight and it is within walking distance from the best Hong Kong hotel in the city. To get the best deals, be prepared to bargain and the best deals are found at Temple Street, which also has the best eateries.
