Many companies were devastated by loss of workforce and raw materials during World War II. With all of the country’s resources going toward the war effort, by the end of the conflict, some companies had ceased to exist while others were a mere shadow of their previous size and strength. One of example of a company in the latter category who managed to rebuild and persevere was southwestern company .
Founded in 1855, the company had ground to a halt during WWII and had only five full-time employees and some secretaries on staff by 1947. It was the energy and enthusiasm of those five employees that allowed the company to rebound and then expand to the international family of companies it is in 2010.
In 1946 Fred Landers had a list of 43 names of people he felt were good prospects to join the southwestern sales team. Landers, along with Dortch Oldham and R.W. “Bob” Henderson had returned from war and sold books in the summer of 46. They noticed that books were easier to sell in the post-war economic boom and turned Landers list of 43 prospects into a sales force of between 400-500 people by 1948. The combination of a blossoming population of soldiers and their children needing educational books and a huge workforce looking for jobs as war industries shut down, created a perfect balance of demand and supply. The three comrades criss-crossed the country recruiting, selling, and motivating new salesmen in a textbook example of how to rebuild a company after a major war.

While Las Vegas has traditionally been known as the gambling and gaming capital of the world, and it is certainly a well deserved title, it continues to grow in recognition as a major entertainment hot spot and has world class shows of from a diverse variety of genres. Some of the top comedians, singers, musicians and stage shows travel through Vegas and of those some of them even find permanent homes or extended stays. Instead of being reservoir of performers who are just shy of big name status, Vegas now hosts some of the finest performers and performances in the world. Cirque du Soleil has a permanent home there and presents an ongoing series that includes their latest hits.
Vegas has become one of the sought after performance venue cities in the country as well as the world and it is possible to find a variety of great entertainment options while you’re in town.

What began as a unnamed country road in 1830s has become Singapore’s “glitziest place to shop.” Orchard Road once connected pepper farms, fruit orchards, and netmeg plantations before being converted into a residential precinct in the late nineteenth century. Over the years it became a mixture of bungalows, mansions, Hindu temples and Buddhist and Jewish cemeteries. Early retail industries included wet markets and hawker centres and the first cold storage supermarket (built in 1903). Next came the C.K. Tang department store in the 1950s followed by the 1974 opening of Plaza Singapura, the city’s first multi-story shopping mall.
Today Orchard Road is over two kilometers of shopping malls surrounding a lushly landscaped main thoroughfare. The distinctive malls offer almost 800,000 sq m of eateries and retail stores. Nineteen separate shopping malls house over 5000 stores which cater to shoppers from the budget-conscious to the over-the-top big spenders. Over twenty Singapore hotels are located on Orchard Road as well as hundreds of restaurants, including fast food chains, specialty eateries and world class gourmet restaurants.
Orchard Road is the setting of numerous festivities throughout the year. Exhibitions, musical performances and seasonal festivals are celebrated here along with various promotions and special events hosts by specific retailers, hotels, and restaurants.
